计划结构

苏黎世ETH RobotX倡议的机器人学生奖学金计划致力于在计划相关实验室之一进行研究。

ETH Robotics Student Fellowship

Robotics has become one of the biggest fields of education and research worldwide with strong societal and economic impact. The ETH Robotics Student Fellowship (ETH RSF) program offers graduate students the opportunity to research alongside experts on the specific topic of robotics of their choice. This fellowship takes place mainly during summer (July - August) and is open to all students worldwide. The RobotX initiative at ETH Zurich is committed to fostering and cultivating a culture of diversity and equality.

Application period:

15 January to 29 February 2024 at midnight (Central European Time).

Program dates:

The program will take place from 03 July to 31 August 2024

Eligibility:

All applicants fulfilling the following conditions are eligible for the program:

  • You can attend the entire fellowship period from July 3rd to August 31st. (Note that this time is fixed and cannot be changed)
  • You are currently enrolled in a master program and your expected graduation date is earliest in spring the year after the fellowship (Last-year undergrad students with outstanding performance at a top school are also eligible).

Program structure

The Robotics Student Fellowship program at ETH RobotX initiative is devoted to carrying out research in one of the labs associated to the program.

  • Time frame: 01 July – 31 August. Please note that the time and duration of the fellowship is fixed and there are not exceptions.
  • Eligibility. Master’s students worldwide with an expected graduation date earliest during the spring semester the year after the 2-month fellowship (Last-year undergrad students with outstanding performance at a top school are also eligible).
  • Research experience. Fellows will pursue a research project that aligns with a chosen lab of their interest as part of a research group within the RobotX initiative. This includes interacting and collaborating with group members.
  • Networking and socializing. A number of on-site socializing events will help fellows to get to know people outside their respective research groups, including current ETH students at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Financial award. Fellows will receive a stipend of CHF 4,000 to cover housing and living expenses.
  • Travel costs. Travel and visa expenses will be covered. Students can claim the travel costs against receipts at the beginning of the program up to CHF 1,200 for overseas flights and CHF 500 for shorter distances. Only Economic class (with one checked baggage) and 2nd class train tickets are eligible for reimbursement. The final amount is determined on a per case basis.
  • Accommodation. The program provides accommodation for all fellows and paid for out of the stipends beforehand.

How to apply

Eligibility

You are eligible for the Robotics Student Fellowship if you satisfy the following conditions:

  • You are enrolled in a Master’s study program in Robotics or a closely related field (e.g., electrical engineering, mechanical engineering). Last-year undergrad students with outstanding performance at a top school are also eligible.
  • Your expected graduation date is January 2025 or later.
  • You can attend the entire fellowship period from July 3rd to August 31st.

Admission process:
Your application will be evaluated on the basis of the documents provided. The last step of the application process may include an interview conducted with the shortlisted candidates.

Language requirements

The program is fully conducted in English. Formal evidence is not required. However, the fellowship requires a good working knowledge of English. Your language ability may be assessed during an interview.

Preparing your application

Please begin by exploring the faculty members in the participating hosting labs and their research topics.

You will be asked in your application to indicate three labs to conduct your research (with a preferential order). This will help the program to coordinate optimal lab placements.

Remark: Please do not contact faculty members directly.

Before applying please prepare all required documents (in English) as PDF files (max 10mb per file):

  • Your CV. Please use the external pageEuropass format.

  • Official academic transcript from your home university

  • Letter of motivation/Personal statement (max 1 page). Describe in your own words why you have chosen your proposed scientific area of research. Explain what you hope to accomplish by coming to ETH and how it will support your academic career and prepare you for a career in research. A good personal statement can be written in half a page and you should aim not to write more than a full A4 page. Lay it out carefully to make it easy to read.

  • Two academic referees.

    During the online application you should provide the contact details of these two academic referees. You should be able to provide the following information for each academic referee: i) Name, ii) Title, iii) Position, iv) Website/Google Scholar, v) University/Company, and vi) e-mail. The following are examples of accepted “academic referees”:

    • Master/Bachelor thesis supervisor
    • Master/Bachelor tutor
    • Master/Bachelor program coordinator
    • Professor in charge of a project-based course you have taken
  • Letter of recommendation to be submitted by your academic referees (one per referee) to robotics-student-fellowship@ethz.ch with the subject {student firstname}-{student lastname}-reference-letter-{referee lastname}. Referees should use the Downloadrespective form (PDF, 438 KB). They can sign the recommendation using an electronic signature, or they can print, sign, and scan the form. These two letters have to be submitted before the end of the application period.

Only complete applications with all the required documents can be considered for admission.

  • How flexible is the program when it comes to the start/end date?

    Unfortunately, there is no flexibility.

  • Is it possible to be absent for a short period of time during the program?

    No, this is not possible. Note that the utmost commitment is expected from your side. Please give the room to another student if you are not able to do so.

  • Do I need to be a citizen of a specific country to be eligible for application?

    No, this program is open to students of all nationalities.

  • If applicable, am I required to obtain the appropriate visa to participate in the program?

    Yes, it is your responsibility to acquire the necessary visa. The ETH Student Exchange office will help fellows with the process.

  • What is an official academic transcript?

    An official academic transcript is a document that summarises a student’s academic progress and performance to date, and should include the University and degree programme title, and grades for each course module taken.

    You will probably need to ask your university to provide you with one and it may take a while to produce.

  • Do I need to organize housing by myself?

    No, accommodation will be organized. We provide accomodation for all fellows in the same student house. Housing expenses will be deducted from the scholarship.

  • Does the fellowship allowance cover living expenses in Zurich?

    Yes, the allowance is enough to live comfortably as student in Zurich.

  • I worry about living in Zurich since I do not speak any German. What is life in Zurich like?

    Not speaking German is fine. Zurich is very international (more than 30% are foreigners) and the majority of people speak and understand English. Furthermore, English is the common language at ETH.

  • How long are the commute times in Zurich?

    The accommodations are quite close with a commute time of about half an hour. Public transportation is reliable, clean, safe, and easy to use.
